Woodburner Plan Change

Nelson City Council has made changes to rules around the use of woodburners in the city through a Woodburner Plan Change.

Under the previous Nelson Air Quality Plan, woodburners could only be installed in Nelson’s urban area if they were replacing an existing approved woodburner.

The plan change allows for a limited number of Ultra Low Emission Burners to be installed in two airsheds in the city; Airshed B2 (Stoke, Wakatu and Enner Glynn) and Airshed C (Port Hills, City Centre, The Brook, The Wood and Atawhai).

Submissions on Plan Change A3 closed 17 February 2016, and further submissions closed 18 March 2016.

The Woodburner Plan Change hearing was held in May 2016. The Commissioner's Decision was released on 15 July 2015, and the period for appeals to the Environment Court closed on August 26, with no appeals received.

At its meeting on 8 September, Council approved to make the Woodburner Plan Change (PC A3) operative as of Monday 19 September 2016.
