Harbours
The Nelson Harbour is at the heart of the Nelson community, both in location and spirit.
The Harbourmaster is appointed by Nelson City Council to manage navigational safety in our regional waters. This reaches from Monaco in the South, to Cape Soucis to the North, and out to the territorial sea limit. The Harbours team work with all the Harbour stakeholders including recreational users, Port Nelson, commercial shipping and fishing companies, Maritime New Zealand, Police, FENZ, and commercial operations.
The Harbourmaster operates a Safety Management System which is compliant with the Port and Harbour Marine Safety Code and intends to provide a safe operating environment within our waters. Risks are identified and managed as far as reasonably practicable, and we strive for continuous improvement of our safety systems.
The Harbours team are responsible for monitoring and enforcing the Navigational Safety Bylaw and relevant National Maritime Rules.
