Pax Assadi - SECRETS (Thursday 17th October 2024)

Hi, Pax Assadi here. It’s really nice to see you. Is that a new top? It looks great on you, the colour really compliments your skin tone. It’s been a while since I’ve been to the Nelson Arts Festival. I’ve been busy with life—water blasting my deck, building flat pack furniture, and making award-winning television (Watch Raised By Refugees now on NEON or Sky Go).

Hey, so… I need to tell you something BUT I need you to keep it a secret. Can you do that? Ok, cool. Then come to a designated theatre this season, and I’ll share this secret with you in the form of stand-up comedy. Ideally, you come alone, but if you must, you may bring one other person—maybe a significant other or close friend. Coming in a large group is also acceptable, but you have to make sure that everyone in this group understands that what I’m going to share with you is highly confidential. If they fail to respect the classified nature of what will be said on the night, their life may be at risk.

Experience India - Diwali 2024 (Saturday 19th October 2024)

This festival originated in India and marks the beginning of the New Year. Although Diwali is largely an Indian festival, it is widely celebrated in other countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, Nepal, and Fiji.

More than 800 million people celebrate this festival, and last year, roughly 3000 people celebrated it in Nelson Tasman, making it one of the fastest-growing community festivals.

Everyone is invited to experience the traditional Indian culture. Watch live performances, taste an array of Indian delicacies (all vegetarian), or experience temple rituals.

Join us to participate in rangoli. This is a floor mandala art where patterns are created on the floor using materials such as powdered limestone, dry rice flour, coloured sand, etc. At the event, you can have a hands-on experience making one with us!!

To make this auspicious festival eco-friendly, we strongly recommend biking, walking, carpooling, BYO plates, cutlery and water bottles.

The entry fee is $5, and children under 12 are free.

This is a no-alcohol, smoke-free, family-friendly festival.

Why? Tangi Be Happy (Saturday 19th October 2024)

Why? Tangi Be Happy is a not so funny stand-up comedic act about the state of our political climate in Aotearoa today. It is a reflection of the recent attacks on Te Tiriti o Waitangi by the Coalition Government which seek to take our country back to the Dark Ages.

Why? Tangi Be Happy looks to shine some light on the topic and questions the insanity that we are seeing.

Hosted by so called Māori elitist Hori along with some of his comedic minions including Courtney Dawson, Kura Turuwhenua and Cori Gonzalez-Macuer, Why?

Tangi Be Happy aims to open up dialogue around Te Tiriti o Waitangi and where we see ourselves in the future of our country. It opens up the space to make us laugh about something that makes some of us want to cry.

Why? Tangi Be Happy

The Kingdom of Bling by Richard O'Brien (Sunday 20th October 2024)

From The Rocky Horror Show creator Richard O’Brien comes a new satirical musical, THE KINGDOM OF BLING. The master of madness today announces that the musical will embark on its world premiere “Celebration of Kindness Tour” throughout New Zealand this October.

Starring O’Brien as The Narrator, alongside an extraordinary ensemble cast, this cautionary tale has the wacky hallmarks of Rocky Horror while featuring giants, a menacing fox, trolls, and the king of the land - the obnoxious ‘The He’. The musical is backed by a stonking rock band, belting out original songs in a style that made Rocky Horror such a blast.

THE KINGDOM OF BLING is set in the style of a radio play in "a time of confusion, when so many madly, strange beliefs collide. A time when kindness had been demonised, while crafty blindness wined and dined in a world it had divided”.

As a bonus track, THE KINGDOM OF BLING tour will feature a second act – a Q&A with O’Brien talking about his life, The Rocky Horror Show, the theatre and inspiration for his latest project.

O’Brien further announces that 100% of all royalties of THE KINGDOM OF BLING will go to the Starship Children’s Hospital in perpetuity.

Award-winning entertainer and playwright Rutene Spooner (Ngāti Porou, Ngāruahine) explores his personal connection with his childhood hero, Billy T. Infused with live music, humour, and show-band flair, the electrifying Be Like Billy? isn't just a tribute to Māori showmanship; it also prompts contemplation about the future of Māori entertainment—how to revel in joy without becoming the subject of mockery.

Joined by the flashest southern showband The Tekīra Mutton Birds, Rutene Spooner celebrates the showband legacy, idolises the greatest Māori showman, and tussles with the future of Māori in entertainment, to ask: Can you Be like Billy without being the butt of the joke?
